CIVL 3700  Geology for Civil  Engineers [3-0-3:3]

The course provides introduction to minerals, rocks, structural geology, engineering in geological materials, and introduction to basic soil mechanics for civil engineers. Topic includes: The earth system, rock forming minerals, igneous process, sedimentation, metamorphism, structural geology, soil formation and phase relationships, physical properties of soils, soil classification, clay minerals and soil structure, soil compaction. The course also include six laboratory experiments and two field trips.

Geology Laboratory -- Get Your Hand Dirty

The following six laboratory sessions will be arranged to put your hand on rocks and soils:

Lab 1. Minerals and Igneous Rock Identification

Lab 2. Sedimentary / Metamorphic Rocks Identification

Lab 3. Grain Size Distribution (Sieve Test) and Specific Gravity Test

Lab 4. Grain size distribution (hydrometer test)

Lab 5. Atterberg's limits test

Lab 6. Soil compaction test

Geology Field Trips -- Learn from the Nature

In the class, we organize two geology field trips to explore the diversity of rock formation and geological features in Hong Kong.

Field Trip 1:Volcanic Rocks

HKUST Campus tour; High Island Reservoir [Field Trip 1 Guide]

Field Trip 2: Sedimentary rocks
